Man, 36, charged with murder of Daniel Anjorin, 14, after Hainault stabbings | England

A man has been charged with murder following a series of stabbings in Hainaut on Tuesday that left a teenager dead.

Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, 36, was charged with the murder of Daniel Anjorin, 14. He will appear at Barkinghead Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Monzo, who holds dual citizenship of Spain and Brazil, has also been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm, burglary and possession of a bladed object. The families of all victims have been notified.

The charges were approved by the Crown Prosecution Service’s Homicide Unit and followed an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.

Jaswant Narwal, chief prosecutor for CPS London North, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Marcus Arduini Monzo with the murder of 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, who was fatally stabbed in Hainault on Tuesday 30 April. Our thoughts remain firmly with Daniel’s family and all who were affected by this horrific incident.

“We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and they are entitled to a fair trial.” It is extremely important that there is no reporting, commenting or sharing of information online that could in any way prejudice this proceeding.

Police said they were called just before 7am on Tuesday after reports a vehicle had crashed into a house in Thurlow Gardens, Hainault, east London.

Police said a suspect armed with a sword then stabbed people in a series of attacks, injuring two police officers who suffered serious injuries and two members of the public.

The suspect was arrested 22 minutes after the first call to police and was taken into custody after being shot with a Taser, a stun gun that some officers are allowed to carry. The suspect was then taken to hospital as he was injured when his vehicle crashed into a house.

Speaking on Tuesday, before the victim was named, Chief Deputy Stuart Bell said: “It is with great sadness that I can confirm that one of the injured, a 14-year-old boy, has died. He was taken to hospital after being stabbed and sadly died shortly afterwards.

“The child’s family is supported by specially trained staff. All of us at Metropolis are keeping them in our thoughts at this unimaginably difficult time.”

The Met said earlier on Tuesday: “We were called just before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area. There were reports of people being stabbed. We currently understand that the suspect assaulted other members of the public and two police officers.

On Wednesday, Sir Mark Rowley, the Met commissioner, gave details of the injuries the two officers suffered. One staff member needed emergency surgery to save the use of his arm, he told LBC Radio.

Mr Rowley, who visited the two officers in hospital, said: “I have spoken to the family and colleagues of the female officer who is really badly injured [her] the arm really badly damaged and the surgeon spends … many, many hours basically putting her arm back together. It’s going to be a long road to recovery.”

He said one inspector suffered injuries that left his arm “badly damaged”.

Daniel Anjorin attended the same school as one of the victims of an attack in Nottingham in 2023. He was a pupil at Bancroft Private School in Woodford Green, whose former pupil Grace O’Malley-Kumar was stabbed to death in June.
